Prices and ratings in the boxes above are Amazon selling prices read on 8 Nov 2026, rounded to the nearest ₹100. Products are the most-rated ones of each type that we found, shown as examples, not a ranking. Prices quoted in the text below are from the dates given beside them and may differ from today’s Amazon price.

This page prices the split AC vs window AC decision on one same-brand pair: Panasonic’s 1.5 ton 5-star split and its 5-star window unit, both rated 5,100 W. Figures come from Panasonic India’s product pages and Amazon.in listings, plus the Daikin, LG and Samsung rate cards, all read 30 September 2026. Every difference between figures is our arithmetic.

The short answer. On this pair, the window unit was about ₹8,100 cheaper on Amazon.in (30 September 2026) and its label shows 342.30 kWh a year more (about 50% more, our arithmetic), on BEE’s basis of 1,600 cooling hours a year. At Maharashtra’s ₹12.40 per kWh slab that is about ₹4,245 a year, so the split recovers its higher price in about 1.9 years (our arithmetic; your hours and tariff will differ).

  • Choose a window AC if you rent and expect to move (LG: window ACs offer “easier relocation without structural modifications to walls”), if the room is up to 150 sq ft (LG’s guidance), or if your household stays in the lowest MSEDCL slab, where the payback stretches to about 4.3 years (our arithmetic).
  • Choose a split AC for a room above 150 sq ft (LG’s guidance), a household bill that reaches the 101 to 300 unit slab or higher, or to keep the compressor outside the room (LG’s point, quoted below).

Sources: Panasonic India’s product page for each model, read 30 September 2026. Amazon.in listings agree on the window unit’s ISEER and kWh and on the split’s kWh.

The finding. Same maker, same rated capacity, same “5-star” label, and the window unit’s annual figure is 342.30 kWh higher: 1,023.31 against 681.01, about 50% more (our arithmetic). Its ISEER is 3.86 against the split’s 5.80.

Why both can be “5-star”. BEE rates window (unitary) and split ACs on separate tables, so a star rating compares ACs within one form factor, not across them. On the last BEE tables we could source (1 July 2022 to 31 December 2024), a 5-star window AC needed an ISEER of 3.5 or more and a 5-star split 5.0 or more; our 5 star vs 3 star AC page explains the star system.

The split’s printed voltage range is wider at both ends, and its maximum cooling ambient is 5°C higher (our arithmetic). Both use R-32.

Running cost: what 342.30 kWh a year costs

Every kWh figure above rests on BEE’s statutory basis of 1,600 cooling hours a year, about 4.4 hours a day averaged over a year (our arithmetic). It is a yardstick, not your bill. We price the gap at Maharashtra’s residential tariff (MSEDCL, FY 2026-27, effective 1 April 2026), the only state tariff on this page. The ₹130 monthly fixed charge is left out, and the tariff order we read does not mention electricity duty, so none is included. Pick the slab your household’s monthly units reach.

MSEDCL residential slab ₹ per kWh Window’s extra running cost a year Years for the split to recover the ₹8,100 price gap Years if the ₹1,000 installation difference is added (₹9,100)
1 to 100 units 5.56 About ₹1,903 About 4.3 About 4.8
101 to 300 units 12.40 About ₹4,245 About 1.9 About 2.1
301 to 500 units 16.64 About ₹5,696 About 1.4 About 1.6

All figures are our arithmetic: 342.30 kWh multiplied by the slab rate, then the price gap divided by that result. The ₹8,100 is the gap between the two rounded Amazon.in offer prices in the table above, read 30 September 2026; prices move. The ₹1,000 is the difference between the split and window lines on the Daikin, LG and Samsung rate cards below, before tax. Panasonic’s own charges we could not read, so that last column borrows other makers’ cards.

Installation: what each involves and what it costs

Split. Daikin’s scope of standard installation covers “Mounting and installation of indoor unit on wall”, “Placing the outdoor unit at a safe and serviceable location”, “Drilling one hole on a brick wall (no core cutting)”, “Laying of interconnected copper pipe”, laying the drain pipe and vacuuming the piping. Not covered: core cutting through a thick concrete wall, and the main power supply to the outdoor unit, which the customer provides. LG gives a split “Installation timeline: 2-4 hours”.

Window. LG’s steps: “Measure window dimensions”, “Create support brackets or use existing window frame”, “Slide unit into position and seal gaps”, with an “Installation timeline: 1-2 hours”. Daikin: “In case of Window AC, all carpentry/grill modification charges are extra.” Voltas asks the customer to “complete basic arrangements” where “Framework, Glass/Grill Cutting for WAC is needed”.

Renters. LG writes that “For tenants, window ACs offer easier relocation without structural modifications to walls.” That is LG’s statement.

Item Daikin (from 1 March 2026) LG (from 17 February 2026) Samsung
Split installation ₹1,500 (₹1,770 with GST) ₹1,500 ₹1,500 (“Initial Installation”)
Window line ₹500 re-installation (₹590 with GST) ₹500 ₹500
Extra copper pipe, per metre ₹1,100 (₹1,298 with GST) ₹1,050, with insulation and vinyl tape Not in the data we read
Split dismantling ₹600 (₹708 with GST) ₹500 Not in the data we read
Window dismantling ₹350 (₹413 with GST) ₹400 Not in the data we read

Daikin’s card prints each figure before and with GST; LG’s and Samsung’s state taxes extra. Daikin labels its ₹500 window line re-installation. LG’s own magazine quotes split installation at ₹1,199, “applicable till 30 days from the date of purchase”, against ₹1,500 on its rate card. Voltas offers standard installation free with a voltas.com purchase (its offer text) and charges ₹1,050 per metre plus GST for extra pipe “(Including gas charging)”.

Room size

LG’s split-vs-window guidance: a window AC for “small to medium rooms (up to 150 sq ft)”, a split for “larger spaces (150+ sq ft)”. That is LG’s rule of thumb for the form factor, not a sizing chart; LG’s separate capacity guide puts 1.5 ton at 120 to 180 sq ft.

Noise and maintenance

Panasonic states the window unit at 51/49 dB-A (high/low) for the whole unit in the room, and the split’s indoor unit at 47/34 dB-A (high/quiet), with its 54 dB-A outdoor unit outside. At the top setting that is 4 dB-A apart (our arithmetic); Panasonic names the bottom steps differently. LG: “split air conditioners with the compressor housed outside the home minimize noise disturbance indoors, compared to window ACs where the entire unit sits in the wall.” LG also writes that its window ACs “operate at sound levels as low as 44 dB”; its AW-Q18WUZA spec table lists 44 dB(A) at the L fan step, 40 at SL and 60 at SH.

On upkeep, LG writes: “Since a window AC has just one unit, the cost of maintenance is low, and it is easier to service”, while a split needs “periodic maintenance … both indoor and outdoor units”. The rate cards (taxes extra) point the same way:

Item Window Split
Gas charging, LG (from 17 February 2026) ₹1,100 ₹2,750 (inverter)
Gas charging, Samsung ₹1,100 ₹2,750 (inverter split)
In-home repair, LG ₹650 ₹750
Repair charges, Samsung ₹500 ₹600

LG’s card labels its ₹1,100 line “Window AC (R22) / Inverter”; none of the LG gas lines we read names an R-32 window unit. If a unit of either type stops cooling, see AC not cooling.

Price bands, as of September 2026

LG’s indicative ranges (“Actual Prices vary”), from an LG article dated 26 May 2026, read 30 September 2026:

Capacity Window Split
1 ton ₹25,000 to ₹35,000 ₹30,000 to ₹45,000
1.5 ton ₹32,000 to ₹42,000 ₹38,000 to ₹55,000
2 ton “Not commonly available” ₹48,000 to ₹70,000

Observed on 30 September 2026, two same-brand 1.5 ton 5-star pairs: Panasonic’s window listed about ₹8,100 below its split on Amazon.in, and Voltas’s 185INV Elite window about ₹8,500 below its 185INV Vertis Elite Gold split on voltas.com (our arithmetic). The Voltas pair is not capacity-matched: Voltas states 5,000 W for the window and 5,050 W for the split. For the compressor side of the choice, see inverter vs non-inverter AC.

What we could not verify

  • Panasonic’s installation and repair charges. Its chart is an image we could not read.
  • Window-AC installation instructions (tilt, frame support) from a window manual. We read none.
  • Energy figures for the Voltas split. Not on the Voltas pages we read.
  • Tariffs outside Maharashtra. This page uses only MSEDCL’s.
  • A health comparison. No manufacturer or health-body page we read compares window and split ACs on health.

FAQs

Which type of AC is best for a home?

It turns on three things. Room size: LG draws the line at 150 sq ft. Tenancy: LG says window units relocate “without structural modifications to walls”. Your tariff slab: on the Panasonic pair, the split’s extra ₹8,100 comes back in about 1.4 to 4.3 years across three MSEDCL slabs, at BEE’s 1,600 hours (our arithmetic).

What are the disadvantages of window AC?

On the Panasonic pair: 342.30 kWh a year more at the same rated capacity and star label, the whole unit in the room at 51/49 dB-A, a narrower printed voltage range (145 to 280 V against 100 to 290 V) and a 50°C maximum cooling ambient against 55°C. LG also limits its window recommendation to rooms up to 150 sq ft.

Which uses more electricity, split or window AC?

On the one same-brand, same-capacity pair on this page, the window: 1,023.31 kWh a year against 681.01, both labelled 5-star and both rated 5,100 W (BEE 1,600-hour basis). This page has no other matched pair with both figures.

Which AC is good for health, window or split?

No manufacturer or health-body page we read compares them on health, so we make no claim.
