The short answer. In the documents we read, Honeywell, Winix, Dyson, LG and Levoit’s Core 400S manual say to replace the main filter at about 12 months; Samsung says six months if the Cube runs daily. Carbon filters run from 3 months (Honeywell) to 24 months (Coway USA). Seven brands say not to wash the main filter. Reset steps differ by model.

This page covers replacing filters. For cleaning a washable pre-filter, see how to clean an air purifier filter. Still deciding whether you need a purifier? See humidifier vs purifier.

What we read: 24 sources covering 10 brands, all read 30 September 2026, including four owner’s manuals: Honeywell HPA090 to HPA300 series (made under licence by Helen of Troy; the copy we read sits on a Canadian site), Levoit Core 400S, Winix 5500-2 and LG AS401VSA0/AS401VGA1. Xiaomi lines come from its global site. [3P-HOST] marks a licensed seller or third-party site; [HOST UNVERIFIED] means we could not confirm who runs it. Neither counts in any maker tally here.

Coway USA also lists a separate Fine Dust Filter (AP-1018F, AP-3018B) at 4 to 6 months.

Several makers qualify their figures. Honeywell’s manual calls its period “a guideline only”. LG says its lamps run on cumulative use time, “so they can operate differently from the actual filter lifespan”; the AS401’s orange light comes on after 3,600 to 4,000 hours. Levoit’s Core 400S manual: “You may not need to change your filter yet, but you should check it”. Philips says actual FY0194/30 lifetime varies with use.

Where makers contradict themselves

Levoit. Its maintenance blog says main filters every 6 to 12 months, carbon every 3 to 6. The Core 400S manual says 12 months. For the Core 400S, follow the manual.

Blueair. Three dated answers: every six months (FAQ, December 2024), “6-12 months, depending on usage and air quality.” (guide, December 2025) and 9 to 12 months for the mini restful (updated October 2025). The 2025 guide’s 12-month HEPA and 3 to 6 month carbon lines describe purifiers in general, not Blueair’s filters, so they are not in our table.

Honeywell. The manual says hold about 2 seconds; its licensed store [3P-HOST] says about 3. The manual wins for the HPA series.

Can I just wash the HEPA filter instead?

Seven of the ten brands say no, in their own documents:

  • Honeywell HPA manual: “None of the filters are washable. DO NOT immerse them in water.”
  • Winix 5500-2 manual: “Do not wash and reuse the True HEPA Filter.” Its Washable AOC carbon filter “can be cleaned up to four times”.
  • Levoit Core 400S manual: main filter, “Do not clean”.
  • Philips: “These filters need to be replaced.”
  • Samsung: the filters “cannot be cleaned”.
  • LG AS401 manual: “Do not wash the PuriCare Main Filter or the deodorizing filter with water.”
  • Blueair: “Washing damages the fiber structure that traps particles.”

Coway’s Airmega article [HOST UNVERIFIED] also says never wash them. We found no statement from Dyson or Xiaomi.

Pre-filters differ. Levoit’s Core 400S manual says brush or vacuum only, “Do not clean the filter with water or other liquids.” Honeywell’s HPA carbon pre-filter is replaced, not washed. Philips, Samsung, LG, Blueair and Winix (if “excessively soiled”) allow rinsing, as do Coway’s Airmega article [HOST UNVERIFIED] and blog [3P-HOST]. The method is in our filter cleaning guide.

How to do an air purifier filter change

  1. Unplug first. Levoit’s Core 400S manual opens its filter steps with “Unplug the air purifier.” LG AS401 manual: “Turn off the power and unplug the appliance.” Blueair Blue Signature: “Always turn off and disconnect the appliance from the power supply before changing the filters”. Dyson: “Always unplug your machine before changing filters.” Honeywell’s HPA manual and Winix’s 5500-2 manual also say to disconnect or unplug before servicing or maintenance.
  2. Remove the old filter. Winix: grasp the front panel’s upper edge and pull it forward. LG AS401: pull the filter set out by its top handle.
  3. Catch the dust. LG suggests newspaper or a paper towel underneath.
  4. Clean the housing. Levoit’s Core 400S manual: vacuum hose only, “Do not use water or liquids to clean the air purifier.”
  5. Unwrap the new filter. Winix and Levoit both say remove the plastic.
  6. Check the direction. Blueair Blue Signature: arrow “pointing up”. Honeywell’s store [3P-HOST]: arrows toward the motor.
  7. Fit the right number. Honeywell HPA090 and HPA100 take one HEPA filter, HPA200 two, HPA300 three.
  8. Reset the filter light.

Filter light still on after a filter change?

Honeywell’s store [3P-HOST] says its purifiers “cannot detect when a new filter has been installed.” LG’s help page for this problem says its lamps count cumulative use time. Do the reset for your model. Resets beyond the table:

  • Honeywell HPA, early change: plugged in, not powered on, hold each button at least 5 seconds.
  • LG AeroFurniture: Power and Mood Light together, 3 seconds.
  • LG 360 Alpha: Settings, Filter Capacity, Reset Filter.
  • LG 360 Hit subscription: no filter reset function.
  • Philips: no reset step found; its replace signal is C7 on some models, 2, 3 or 4 on others.

Hold times in these documents run from about 2 seconds to 15, so never borrow another model’s.

Genuine or third-party filters

In the sources we read, three makers tie the warranty to genuine filters:

  • Winix: warranty “will be voided if” “Non-Winix Brand filters are used in the unit.”
  • Dyson: a non-genuine filter may “invalidate your guarantee”.
  • Blueair: third-party filters “might void your warranty”.

Honeywell, Levoit and Xiaomi ask for genuine filters, and Philips promotes them, for performance, without tying it to the warranty. We found no statement from Samsung or LG.

What a replacement filter costs

Seller Filter Price listed, 30 September 2026
Winix store Filter A, 115115 (5500-2 series) List $84.99, sale $54.99
Coway USA Deodorization Filter (AP-1018F, AP-3018) $46.00
Coway USA Fine Dust Filter (AP-1018F, AP-3018B) $40.00
LG AAFTDT301 (PuriCare 360 AS560DWR0, AS330DWR0) Sale $129.99, strikethrough $140.99, out of stock
Honeywell store [3P-HOST] True HEPA Replacement Filter H (HRF-H1) $27.95, sale price shown
Honeywell store [3P-HOST] Universal Carbon Pre-Filter A (HRFAP1V2) $15.95, sale price shown

Blueair’s 2025 guide gives three annual cost figures that disagree: $50 to $200, room-size bands up to $150 to $300, and $100 to $200.

Signs a filter needs changing early

  • Levoit Core 400S: more noise, less airflow, odours, a visibly clogged filter.
  • Blueair: “The filter looks dark gray or black.”
  • Honeywell: contaminants can “stop the air from moving through it”.
  • Dyson: pollution or pets may mean changing it sooner.

What we could not verify

Across the 24 sources we found no main-filter washing statement from Dyson or Xiaomi, no genuine-filter statement from Samsung or LG, and no filter price for Dyson, Philips, Samsung, Levoit, Xiaomi or single Blueair filters. We found no US Xiaomi purifier page and no Coway-run Airmega manual.

FAQ

How often should air purifier filters be changed?

Follow your manual. In our sources, main filters mostly run from 6 months (Samsung Cube, daily use) to about a year; carbon filters run from 3 to 24 months. Coway USA lists its Fine Dust Filter (AP-1018F, AP-3018B) at 4 to 6 months.

Can I just wash my air purifier filter?

Not the main filter, for seven of the ten brands we read. Some pre-filters can be rinsed; Levoit Core 400S and Honeywell HPA pre-filters cannot. See how to clean an air purifier filter.

How do I reset my air purifier after changing the filter?

It is model-specific: about 2 seconds (Honeywell HPA), 5 seconds or more (Winix 5500-2), 3 seconds (Levoit Core 400S), 15 seconds or the app (Blueair Blue Signature).

What happens if you run an air purifier with a dirty filter?

Honeywell says contaminants can stop air moving through it. Blueair says airflow drops even at high speed; Winix says odour can occur.
